State and local governments are still short of revenue despite the modest economic outlook. During 2011, the 45 states with sales tax collected over $1.5 billion in audit assessments from businesses. Nationally, sales tax accounts for 45% of total state revenue and that percent increases each year as income tax receipts shrink. The larger demand for sales tax revenue means the states are looking for ways to increase the taxpayer base and increase revenue by conducting more audits on multistate businesses.
